We designed this workshop for the Shanghai Museum of Glass. A workshop for kids, so we tried to do something more simple than the coin purse. Also considering that people are not using coins anymore in China, we tried to find some other useful things people can make easily at home. The irony of making […]

We have gathered a ton of leftover materials from previous events and transformed them into stylish and sustainable reversible tote bags. In collaboration with Home Sweet Home, these unique bags are crafted from the eye-catching event tarps and shirts from past hackathons and school events.

A fantastic way to repurpose and celebrate our past experiences at @nyushanghai !
fantastic workshop on recycling plastic at PSA @po fantastic workshop on recycling plastic at PSA @powerstationofart The workshop takes place while the first major exhibition in Asia by the legendary Brazilian design duo Studio Campana, “Impermanence: Forty Years of Design by Studio Campana”is happening at PSA.
The studio work incorporates the idea of transformation, reinvention, and the integration of craftsmanship in mass production. Giving preciousness to common materials carries not only the creativity in their design but also their very Brazilian characteristics – the colors, the mixtures, the creative chaos, the triumph of simple solutions.

the course Re-Made in China is back this semester the course Re-Made in China is back this semester @nyushanghai and we are collaborating with our neighbors of the Weifang community. This time a group of our students facilitated a workshop and show them how they could reuse plastic bags at home. During the semester students taking this course will work closelly with this group of people based in Shanghai. They will raise awareness about plastic pollution and propose solutions to improve their lives, by the creation of products that they will make using recycled material.
Another exciting semester ahead! Looking forward to see the results 😊❤️

It has been a while but I wanted to share what stu It has been a while but I wanted to share what students from Re-Made in China made with trash. Re-Made in China is a service-learning course @nyushanghai under the Dean’s Service Scholars Program that offers students a chance to explore innovative ways to transform discarded materials into products that can respond to the needs and improve the lives of specific community members.
Last semester, 16 students established relationships with staff from the Campus Store and cafeteria, as well as the custodial staff “ayis,” interviewing them about their work and ongoing challenges, and then brainstorming ways to use recycled materials to help them.
What did they make?
A trolley to make it easier for the cleaning ladies to carry heavy tools. Space-saving bookshelves for the Campus Store. A space divider made of recycled plastic strips to create a break room for the cafeteria staff.

check them out! #preciousplastic

I taught Toy Design @nyushanghai this past semeste I taught Toy Design @nyushanghai this past semester and students were not able to use any machine to make their prototypes 😭. Instead they worked with two Chinese communities who manufactured their toys.
One of the communities visited us last week. They recycle material to knit products and sell them to raise funds and help disadvantaged children in China.
It was amazing to see how the #covid19 turned my course into something socially responsible. I'm preparing Re-Made in China again for next semester, now connected with more recyclers and communities in China.
Exciting things are coming!! #recycle #community #shanghai #crochet #knitters #remadeinchina

This is a glimpse of the #PlasticFantastic course taught by professor Felix Beck. It was amazing to see how engaged the students were working with the @realpreciousplastic machines and recycling the trash produced on campus, just right next to the trash management facility. This is the perfect place to have the Plastic Research Lab, which has been built almost entirely by recycling the “trash” produced on campus, where they also have the student dorms and faculty residences. Certainly a great example to follow, we are hopping to have the same luck in our new campus in Shanghai.
Congrats Felix, the students, and #nyuabudhabi !!

In this workshop we invited the Chinese community Weifang Jiedao and @nyushanghai students to learn about recycling plastic bags, get involved with the community, and practice Chinese language skills 😁
The people of the community sent representatives to learn how to make coin purses with plastic bags and irons, so they can teach the other community members later.

It was incredible to see the craft skills of these ladies, specially what they do recycling pantyhose. 😍

We are looking forward to learn from them too! Check out what they gave us, swipe to see the last two images! 🌷🦐🌷

We have held a lot of events this semester as part of our Re-Makerspace @nyushanghai and funded by @nyu_green green grants.
The beach clean up was a field trip for the students taking the course Re-Made in China and also open to the NYUSH community. Without any doubts, this was a fun trip on a beautiful and sunny day. We had a lot of fun, but also - after picking up more than 30kg of rubbish - we realized how bad the trash problem is and reflected on ways we can do better. Great learning experience! #preciousplastic
last week we had an amazing panel discussion @nyus last week we had an amazing panel discussion @nyushanghai with Jayne Goh, Heather Kaye, and Xenia Sidorenko, who are transforming the fashion and clothing industry by leading the way to more eco-responsible business practices.⁣
⁣
🌿 Jayne Goh is the co-founder of P.E.T. – Plastic Ecological Transformation which supplies eco-friendly polyester textiles (made from plastic bottles) to manufacturers of items such as T-shirts and uniforms. ⁣
⁣
🌿 Heather Kaye is the co-founder of Finch and @loopswim . With partner Itee Soni, they are dedicated to making eco-friendly designed clothing and swimwear from recycled plastic bottles.⁣
⁣
🌿Xenia Sidorenko, founder of @weusedem , upcycles discarded jeans to make bags. Her overall eco-friendly project has a socially engaged component in that she gives hands-on workshops to share her knowledge - teaching participants how to transform their own recycled textiles.⁣

Re-make: make (something) again or differently.
In this class students will investigate why China has become the world’s largest importer of waste. They will study local communities in China, how they manage their waste, and explore innovative ways to transform discarded materials or products around us into something new and precious in areas such as art, graphic and industrial design, architecture, fashion, textiles, etc. Through research and development, students will learn how traditional techniques and new technologies among the sustainable design philosophy can be utilized as powerful tools for addressing social and environmental problems.
